Russell Lowell Hughes, 85, of Battle Creek, MI, passed away Sunday, May 9, 2021, at Bronson Battle Creek. He was born November 29, 1935, in Battle Creek, MI, the son of Norwood Godfrey and Clara Ella (Dunn) Hughes.
Russell graduated from Hastings High School in 1953 and then enlisted in the US Marines, where his service included reconnaissance and related training. In a distinguished 35-year career with Firestone (later Bridgestone), Russell held management positions around the world, including in the U.S., Liberia, Pakistan and Singapore. He then went on to own his own store in Baytown, Texas until his retirement. Russell fully embraced life. He loved food and travel, and actively pursued both interests. His hobbies were numerous, including fishing, golfing and playing games. He spent hours watching the eagles at Fine Lake and enjoyed seeing wildlife wherever he could find it. A steady, wonderful man, filled with good humor and kindness, Russ’s friends and family will miss him greatly.
He is survived by his daughter: Theresa (Tony Neghaiwi) Hughes; one brother: Neil (Kate) Godfrey Hughes; two grandchildren: Nicole (Martin Zahnert) Hughes Neghaiwi, and Brenna Hughes Neghaiwi; and three great-grandchildren: Esme Romi Neghaiwi, Felix Anton Zahnert, and Jakob Killian Zahnert. Russell was close to his extended family and very much enjoyed spending time with his niece's, nephews’ and cousins’ families.
Russell was preceded in death by his parents and his son Mark Bradley Hughes.
Cremation will be conducted. A memorial service will be held in the fall.
