I.V. Simpson was born on July 20, 1939 to Ethel (Eva) Mae Scott-Nisby and Earnest Harris, in Greenville, Alabama. His father who raised him from a young child, Henry Simpson, was his loving and devoted father and grandfather to his children. He moved to Battle Creek, Michigan in 1945. He attended Springfield High School where he played basketball. He was employed at Post Cereal and was a Union Steward and retired in 1998 after 34 years of service.
I.V. started singing at the age of 15, singing doo-woops with a group of friends. He began to sing with the Willie Brown Combo. In 1962, he was part of a band called the Fayatons, with very close friends that signed with Tri-Phi Records that was eventually bought from Motown Records. I.V. was also a longtime member of R&B group, Midnight Fantasy, and sang with many groups and music combos throughout the years, including with Lou Wilson, Walter Garrett, and Sonny and Bobby Holley. In June 23, 2017, the city of Battle Creek, Michigan recognized this day as “I.V. Simpson Day”, a tribute to his entertainment life.
I.V. departed this life on Thursday, April 29, 2021 with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He was preceded in death by his mother, father, and devoted father, Henry Simpson.
I.V. married Lovie Fisher, in 1963. They were married for seventeen years. He leaves to cherish his son, Antonio (Pilar) Jones of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, two daughters, Renee Simpson-Lindsay of Battle Creek, Michigan and Carla Simpson-Bailey, of Chesapeake, Virginia. Eight grandchildren, Angelito (Kasi) Anderson, Kuy Wright, Bonitianna Simpicalo, David Gibson Jr., Lance Bailey, Antonio I.V. Jones, Ariel Bailey, and Favian Jones, and five great grandchildren and one on the way.
I.V as a father, grandfather, and great grandfather, is to know unconditional love! He was a co-parent not just for his children, but he co-parented his entire family as the Patriarch. He loved his family and friends dearly and his memory will remain in our hearts and spirits forever. It was our unique privilege and Blessing to have had him in our lives. We praise and thank God for him.
Visitation will be held at Bachman Hebble Funeral Service on Friday, May 7th from 5:30-7:30 PM. We ask that you enter the funeral home from North Bedford Road and the staff will guide your vehicle from there as the visitation will be outdoors in our back parking lot. Funeral service will be Saturday, May 8th at 1:00 PM at Maranatha Original Church of God with Pastor Geraldine T. Richardson officiating.
