Emajene L. Hopkins, 91, of Pennfield Twp., MI passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 3, 2021. She was born to George and Julia (Jemis) Noon on October 25, 1929 in Battle Creek. She married Robert E. Hopkins on August 10, 1968 however the marriage ended in divorce. Em graduated from Battle Creek Central in 1947. She worked at Michigan Bell as a telephone operator before entering the nursing program at Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo, MI. Em obtained her degree in nursing and held the title of RN. She worked in labor and delivery at Community Hospital in Battle Creek, Kaiser Permanent in Los Angles, Hurley Hospital in Flint, St. Joseph’s Hospital in Ft. Worth, and St. Edward’s Hospital in Ft. Smith. In 1966, she returned to Battle Creek to Community Hospital working for 25 years concluding her career having assisted with 10,138 babies. Em kept a journal listing all the babies and their sex she helped deliver. She retired from Community Hospital on October 25, 1991.
Em was a member of First Congregational Church; where she had been active with Dayspring Church Choir ringing the hand bells for entertainment at area nursing homes. She was a member of AARP and a driver for the American Cancer Society and the American Red Cross. Em tutored for the Literacy Council and volunteered at the Franklin Center dispensing food with the Food Bank. She enjoyed visiting the elderly in area nursing homes spreading “cheer and Joy.”
In her early years she was an active bowler for M66 bowling leagues, enjoyed crocheting, knitting, and transcribing printed material into Braille (such as children’s books, recipes, insurance rates, scuba diving instruction, grandfather clock and sewing making instructions). She had annually crocheted as of 1998 over 40 lap robes for wheelchair bound people in nursing homes. Em was affectionately known as “Grandma Emmy” and will truly be missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her children: Chuck (Roxie) Hopkins, Nancy (Randy) Edgerton, and Bobby (Colleen) Hopkins; grandchildren; Apryl (Robb) Macleod, Adam (Rachel) Hopkins, Spring (Keith) Schroeder, Christina Fornell, Devon Hopkins, Courtney Hopkins Conley; great grandchildren: Malcom & Asher Hopkins, Addison, Aiden & Lylee Hopkins, Anthony, Louie, & Dominic Campagna, and Aaron Rainey; and good friends: Rick (Debby) Abbott, Sue Ball, and Ryan and Holly Ball.
Visitation will be held at Bachman Hebble Funeral Service on Tuesday, April 13, 2021 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM with the funeral service to immediately follow at 12:00 PM. Burial to follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Battle Creek. Memorial tributes may be made to First Congregational Church or Humane Society of Southcentral Michigan.
