Obituary for Hubert "Bert" Wilson

Hubert “Bert” Wilson was born in Senatobia, MS on May 18th, 1938. To the late Scott and Savannah (Hall) Wilson. Hubert was the sixth of ten children. It was in his early life that Bert accepted Jesus Christ and developed strong faith. After that he was destined for success.
Following his graduation from Senatobia High School, he relocated to Chicago, IL., shortly after he moved to Battle Creek, MI. Bert worked in transportation for the Battle Creek VA Medical Center for 38 years. He drove 324 miles one way every weekend to Sun Prairie, WI. for truck driving school to obtain the proper certification needed for the upcoming semi driver position at the VA. After Bert finished truck driving school he was the VA’s first African American semi driver and he held that position until retirement. He also worked several part-time jobs and even established his own trucking company, H&W Trucking Inc., all while working at the VA.

He obtained his associate‘s from Kellogg Community College. Bert was a great conversationalist, it was not uncommon for a relative, friend, or employee to stop by for a brief visit that resulted in a 6 hour conversation with lots of laughter. He was humorous and well-liked by the community. Bert’s greatest joy was his family, he was like a father to his grandchildren, great grandchildren and many others. He gave generously in silence, without hope of praise or a reward. Our family didn’t have to use Google - Dad knew EVERYTHING! He had a phenomenal personality, a kind spirit which naturally attracted the most inquiring minds, now when you mix that with good looks, charm and persuasion that resulted in 6 children, 16 grandchildren, and 26 great grandchildren.

He is survived by his lifelong companion, Edna E. Wilson; children: Vernelle Ray, LaVonza (Bradley) Wilson-Fields, Hubert (Melissa Robertson) Wilson, Sheri Wilson, Harold (Kari) Swift, and Meghan (Demarcus Hodges) Richardson; grandchildren: Nucole Stein, RaMone McKinley, Mellanese (Robert, Jr.) Tubbs, Raphael (Nyesha) Wilson, Shamille Lockwood, LaVon McKinley, Juliano Mays, Jackie Evans III, September Wilson, Amanee Mays, JaVonte Barnett, Julius Barnett, Delvin Swift, and Wilson Swift; 26 great grandchildren; brother, Lois (Alice) Wilson; sisters: Mary (Albert) Burton and Vernell (John Henry) Alexander; brother-in-law, Albert Taylor; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Dad made his journey to the “Big Sky” on March 24, 2021 to join his parents, grandson RaVon McKinley; granddaughter Ebony Lee; great grandson, Jackie Evans IV; son-in-law, Richard Ray; brothers: David T. Wilson and Scott Wilson Jr.; sisters: Igladys Wilson, Emma Sanders, Cora Taylor, and Virginia Pryor.
