Flora was born on July 2, 1935 in Marianna, Arkansas to Ora Lee Neal and Beck Neal, both preceded her in death. Flora graduated from Morton High School in Marianna, AR in 1955 and She moved to Chicago, IL after Graduation. Flora later relocated to Michigan attending Kellogg Community College in Battle Creek, MI obtaining her License Practical Nursing (LPN). She married O’shield May in 1956 and to this union they had four children. The couple were married for 42 years, she later married Henderson Freeman, both preceded her death.
Preceding her in Death also includes two sisters, Rosie Mae Butler of Marianna, AR and Jessie Mae Williams of Minneapolis, MN; four brothers, Robert B. Neal of Marianna, AR, Reverend Hodges Stewart, Sr. of Little Rock, AR, Reverend George Neal of West Memphis, AR, and Herman Neal of Rondo, AR; one granddaughter, Markisha Freeman of Lansing, MI; and brother-in-law, Eddie May, Sr. of St. Louis, MO.
Flora retired from the Battle Creek VA Medical Center, working as an
EKG Technician and Nurse. After retirement, she continued working for Upjohn’s Home Healthcare assisting elderly with daily living activities.
She also was an instructor for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for the American Heart Association. Until her health condition made it impossible, she was a long-time member (45 years) of First Salem Missionary Baptist Church in Battle Creek, Michigan as Head of Nurses Guild, Usher, and Secretary.
In 2013, after she became ill and was later diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.
Her daughter Frances relocated Flora to Lansing, Michigan so that she could provide more care for her. Frances, Brenda, Pat, Walter and other family members would visit with their mother regularly at Eaton County Rehabilitation Center in Charlotte, Michigan. Flora was a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother whom loved to cook, listen to her gospel music, and fellowship with her family and church members.
Mrs. Flora L. May-Freeman is survived by her sons, Walter E. May (Rose) of Battle Creek, MI; special son, Alvin Bonds of Lansing, MI; and Charles Butler of Little Rock, AR; daughters, Patricia A. Gatson (Johnny) of Lansing, MI, Frances E. Freeman (Mark) of Lansing, MI, Brenda
May-Dixon (Melvin) of Spring, TX, and Ira Jean Gilmore of Lithonia, GA; grandsons, Christopher Gatson and Lance Dixon; granddaughters, Nakita Harden, Brittney (Andre) Collins-Riddle, Jasmine Dixon, Mia Dixon, and Mariah Dixon; six great granddaughters; two great grandsons; special nephew, Eddie May; sister, Wanda V. Neal of Pine Bluff, AR; God sister, Patricia Jackson of Battle Creek, MI; God brother, Judge Olly Neal, Jr. of Little Rock, AR; and a host of friends, relatives, including over 50 plus nieces and nephews.
