Obituary

Mr. Richard L. Turner, age 85 died peacefully at home in Battle Creek, on May 5th 2020. Richard was born March 16 1935 in Jackson, Mi. to Delmar Turner and Nellie (Flack) Turner.

Richard graduated from Jackson High School in 1953. He immediately began his career in the car business in Jackson at the local Buick dealership.
He married his lovely wife Janice Faye Johnson June 22, 1957 in Jackson, MI. After taking a job with Stan Lassen Pontiac, Cadillac in 1963 he moved his family to Battle Creek in 1965. Richard retired from Lassen’s in 1998 after a wonderful 35 year career with the dealership.
The couple welcomed two children into their home, Rick and Rowdy. His children remember him as a great role model and leader of the family. There was never a problem too big or too small that dad couldn’t fix.
Richard was a life long racing fan. He began attending the Indy 500 in 1953 and attended 63 races in a row without missing one. He loved collecting Indy and racing memorabilia. During his retirement, he enjoyed traveling all over the county attending open wheel dirt track races, with his traveling buddy his grandson --- Rex Turner.
Richard “never met a stranger”; he would talk to everyone and would soon make them a friend. One thing Richard would tell you is you can never have too many friends. He loved going to his Friday morning breakfasts with his friends Bob, Pat, and Mo.
Richard is survived by his children Rick and Rowdy Turner, both of Battle Creek, MI; grandchildren: Rex Turner; Autumn Nichols, and Harley Turner all of Battle Creek; two great grandchildren Rex L. Turner II and Carson Nichols both of Battle Creek; and his brother: Delbert Turner of Huntsville, Al.
Richard was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years Janice Faye Turner on August 7, 2016; and his father and mother Delmar Turner and Nellie (Flack) Turner of Jackson, MI.
A memorial services will be held at a later date after this pandemic shut-down. Friends wishing to send flowers may send them to the funeral home. The family is interested in other memorial contributions to go to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements by Bachman Hebble Funeral Service, Battle Creek, MI. .www.bachmanhebble.com

I’m sorry to learn about the passing of Dick. He was just an all-around “good guy”. I became acquainted with him in the 80’s when my pseudo mother was his very beloved sister-in-law. I made at least one voyage to the Indy 500 with him and family. Here is a picture of Dick and Jan taken during the 1985 Indy 500 weekend.

I was sorry to hear of Dick's passing. He enjoyed going to and watching Sprint Car and Indy Car races in the past. I always enjoyed talking with Dick and he will be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with the entire family during these tough times.

I’m sad to hear of Dick’s passing, I had just sent him an email a couple of weeks ago inviting him to lunch when this pandemic is over. Instead he’ll be having lunch with is sweetheart. Our sympathy to the sons, grands and greatgrands. I know he loved his babies. Will miss him dearly.

Dick was such a good man. I know he is glad to reunite with Jan. He will also be glad to see Gary. I know they’re going racing. I will always remember when I brought electric kool-aid to the races. He really liked it!! Gary and I thought of Dick & Jan every time for the last 4 years when we had the honor of sitting in their seats at Indy. I’m sure he’s saying “Let’s go racing!” Love to his family in this time of sorrow. Angie H
