It is with tremendous sadness that the family of John David Wissink, II, age 65, of Portage, MI; announces the passing of our dear son, brother, uncle and friend on Tuesday, March 24, 2020 at Glenn Arbor Hospice Residence in Battle Creek, MI.
He was born February 17, 1955 in Battle Creek, MI the son of John David Wissink and Betty Joan (Sealock) Wissink.
John had lived in the Kalamazoo area since he was 21 years old, lived at Residential Opportunity on Shuring Road for the past two years
He is survived by his mother: Betty Joan Granfors of Battle Creek, MI who devoted her life each day to make sure John got the best life possible; a brother: Stephen E. Wissink of Monroeville, PA; and a niece: Erin; a close friend and advocate: Mark Giddings.
He was preceded in death by his father: John Wissink in 2001, brother: Mark Wissink in 1955.
John was born prematurely with brain damage and cerebral palsy, The doctors said he would live less than 24 hours but he lived to be 65. His wheelchair didn't cripple his zeal for life, however. John attended special classes at Western Michigan University and excelled at art and bowing--- he was state champion for a wheelchair bowler with Special Olympics where he once bowled a 246 game. He loved classical piano music. He was a avid fan of baseball's Detroit Tigers and Chicago Cubs and met players from both teams. He had a sly grin, loved to laugh and was loved by many.
. No visitation is planned at the funeral home. Cremation has taken place. A gathering to celebrate John’s life will be scheduled after the COVID-19 crisis ends.
