Obituary for Greta Williams
It is with great sadness that the family of Greta Garbo Williams, age 78 announces the passing of our dear mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend on Saturday, June 23, 2012. After a courageous battle with end of life issues Greta quietly passed away peacefully at the Lifespan Good Samaritan Hospice residence with her daughter by her side.
She was born November 27, 1933 in Youngstown, OH the daughter of Frank Wade and Jimmie McGee.
Greta came to Battle Creek from Chicago in 1953. Greta was a licensed practical nurse with Leila and Community Hospitals, the Coldwater State Home, then finished her nursing career with the Battle Creek Adventist Hospital. She was in nursing for 25 years, retiring in 1991. When she was younger, after her children began their schooling, she was a teacher's aide at Lincoln Elementary for approximately 10 years. She was a member of the Glory Barn church on Helmer Road.
She married Wesley Scott Williams on January 16, 1954 in Battle Creek, MI at the Mount Zion AME Church; however he passed away on Sept. 24, 1997.
She is survived by her daughter: Maya T. Williams of Battle Creek, MI; six sons: Wesley R. Williams of Mechanicsville, MD; Randolph C. Williams of Hephzibah, GA; Ronald N. Williams of Rex, GA; and Robert L. Williams; Reginald G. Williams; and Michael J. Williams all of Battle Creek; eight grandchildren: Ramawn Burke, Erika Purcell-Williams, Shirah Williams, Kenya Williams, Taylor Williams, Logan Williams, Wesley Williams III, and Paul Williams; three great grandchildren: Insatible Burke, Fremawnie Burke, and Ramawn Burke, Jr. and one sister: Irene Daniels of Chicago, IL.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband; two brothers: Robert Robinson and Bozie Farley; and two sisters: Vivian Swygert and Emma Robinson.
Visitation will be held at the Bachman Hebble Funeral Service on Friday, June 29, 2012 where the family will be present from 11 AM until 12:30 PM. Funeral services commemorating the radiant life of Greta Williams will be held in the Bachman Funeral Chapel at 12:30 PM Friday, June 29, 2012 with Pastor Rosalind J. Mathis of the New Beginning Damascus Church officiating. Committal services will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery Chapel, cremation will be conducted and burial of the cremated remains will be with family later at the Oak Hill Cemetery.
